Peugeot 407 2004-2011 Owner's Manual Safety

7SAFETY86 HORN Press one of the spokes of the steering wheel. HAZARD WARNING LAMPS Automatic operation of hazard warning lamps When braking in an emergency, de-pending on the deceleration, the hazard warning lamps come on automatically. They switch off automatically the fi rst time you accelerate. It is also possible to switch them off by pressing the button. ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAMME (ESP) This system is linked and complemen-tary to the ABS system. In the event of a signifi cant variation between the trajectory of the vehicle and the path required by the driver, the ESP monitors wheel by wheel and acts automatically on the engine and on the brake of one or more wheels, to put the vehicle back on course, within the limit of the laws of physics. ESP operation The indicator lamp comes on. Disarming the ESP In exceptional conditions (starting the vehicle when it is stuck in the mud, immobilised in snow, on unstable ground...), it may be advisable to dis-arm the ESP. Press the "ESP OFF" switch, lo-cated on the centre console. The switch lights up and the warning light comes on: the ESP no longer acts on the operation of the engine. Instrument panel indicator light. The system is triggered again: automatically if the ignition is switched off, automatically above 30 mph (50 km/h), manually by pressing the switch again. Press the button, the direction indica-tors fl ash. They can operate with the ignition off.

7SAFETY87 Operating fault When a malfunction of the system oc-curs, the warning light comes on, ac-companied by an audible signal and a message on the multifunction display. Contact a PEUGEOT dealer to have the system checked. Instrument panel indicator light. The ESP offers exceptional safety during normal driving, but this should not encourage the driver to take extra risks (late braking) or drive at high speed. Correct operation of the system depends on compliance with the manufacturer's recommendations regarding the wheels (tyres and rims), the braking compo-nents, the electronic components and the PEUGEOT assembly and operation procedures. After an impact, have the system checked by a PEUGEOT dealer. ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS) The ABS increases the stability and manoeuvrability of your vehicle on braking, in particular on poor or slip-pery road surfaces. This system comes into operation automatically when there is a risk of wheel lock. Normal operation of the ABS may make itself felt by slight vibrations of the brake pedal. This indicates that the ABS is faulty. It also comes on on the instru-ment panel screen. If it comes on permanently above6 mph (10 km/h), it indicates an ABS malfunction. However, the vehicle retains conven-tional servo-assisted braking. Consult a PEUGEOT dealer. EMERGENCY BRAKING ASSISTANCE SYSTEM In an emergency, this system enables the optimum braking pressure to be reached more quickly, thus reducing the stopping distance. It is triggered by the speed at which the brake pedal is activated. The effect of this is a reduction in the resistance of the pedal and an in-crease in braking effi ciency. When braking in an emergency, press fi rmly without releasing the pressure. In emergency braking, press very fi rmly without releas-ing the pressure.Note: when changing wheels (tyres and rims), make sure that these are approved.

7SAFETY88 SEAT BELTS Detection of fastening of the front seat belts When the ignition is switched on , if a front passenger has not fastened their seat belt and if the vehicle speed is below 12 mph (20 km/h) , you are warned by lighting of the seat belt warning lamp . The warning lamp switches off when the seat belt(s) concerned is(are) fastened. If the vehicle speed is above 12 mph (20 km/h) , you are warned by fl ash-ing of the seat belt warning lamp , an audible signal and a message on the multifunction screen identifying the unfastened seat belt(s). Front seat belts withpre-tensioner and force limiter In the event of a serious front impact, the pre-tensioning system instantly tightens the seat belts fi rmly against the bodies of the occupants. The pre-tensioning seat belts are armed when the ignition is on. The force limiter reduces the pressure of the seat belt against the chest of the occupant, so increasing his pro-tection. Rear seat belts The rear seats are all fi tted with a three-point inertia reel seat belt. The rear side seat belts have a force limiter and may be fi tted with a pre-tensioning inertia reel. To fasten the seat belts Pull the strap, then insert the tongue into the buckle. Check that the seat belt is secured correctly by pulling the strap. To unfasten the seat belts Press the red button on the buckle. Before folding the seat back, pull the strap and insert the seat belt tongue into the buckle. This precaution will ensure that each seat belt is in place when the rear seats are lifted again. Note: a bag or an animal placed on the front passenger seat may cause illumination of the warning lamp. The audible signal ceases and the warning lamp switches off when the seat belt concerned is fastened. After two minutes without any action on the seat belts, the fl ashing warning lamp remains on permanently and the audible signal ceases. All of the warn-ings cease when a door is opened or when the engine is switched off. Front seat belt height adjustment: To lower the attachment point, squeeze control 1 and slide it downwards. To raise the attachment point, slide control 1 upwards.
7SAFETY89 The driver must ensure that the passengers use the seat belts correctly and that they are all properly restrained be-fore setting off. Wherever you are seated in the vehi-cle, always fasten your seat belt, even for short journeys. Do not invert the seat belt buckles as they will not fulfi l their role fully. If the seats have armrests * , the lap part of the seat belt must always pass under the armrest. The seat belts are fi tted with an inertia reel permitting automatic adjustment of the length of the strap to your size. The seat belt is stored automatically when not in use. Before and after use, ensure that the seat belt is reeled in correctly. The lower part of the strap must be positioned as low as possible on the pelvis. The upper part must be positioned in the hollow of the shoulder. The inertia reels are fi tted with an au-tomatic locking device which comes into operation in the event of a colli-sion, on emergency braking or if the vehicle rolls over. You can release the device by pulling rapidly on the strap and releasing it. Recommendations for children: - use a suitable child seat if the pas-senger is less than 12 years old or shorter than one metre fi fty, - do not use the strap-guide * when a child seat is installed. - never use the same seat belt to se-cure more than one person, - never allow a child to travel on your lap. Depending on the nature and se-riousness of the impacts , the pre-tensioning device may be triggered before and independently of the air bags. Triggering of the pre-tensioners is accompanied by a slight emission of harmless smoke and a noise, due to the activation of the pyrotechnic car-tridge incorporated in the system. In all cases, the airbag warning lamp comes on. Following an impact, have the seat belts system checked, and if necessary replaced, by a PEUGEOT dealer. * According to model. In order to be effective, a seat belt: - must be tightened as close to the body as possible, - must restrain one adult only, - must not bear any trace of cuts or fraying, - must be pulled in front of you with a smooth movement, checking that it does not twist, - must not be transformed or modifi ed to avoid altering its performance. In accordance with current safety reg-ulations, all repairs and checks must be carried out by a PEUGEOT dealer who guarantees that the work is car-ried out correctly. Have your seat belts checked regularly by a PEUGEOT dealer and particularly if the straps show signs of damage. Clean the seat belt straps with soapy water or a textile cleaning product, sold by PEUGEOT dealers. After folding or moving a seat or rear bench seat, ensure that the seat belt is positioned and rolled up correctly.
7SAFETY AIRBAGS The airbags have been designed to maximise the safety of the occupants (with the exception of the rear centre passenger) in the event of violent col-lisions. They supplement the action of the force-limiting seat belts. In this case, the electronic detectors record and analyse the front and side impacts suffered in the impact detec-tion zones: - in the event of a serious impact, the airbags are deployed instanta-neously and protect the occupants of the vehicle (with the exception of the rear centre passenger); im-mediately after the impact, the air-bags defl ate rapidly so that they do not hinder the visibility of the oc-cupants or their possible exit from the vehicle, - in the event of a minor impact or rear impact and in certain roll-over conditions, the airbags will not be deployed; the seat belt alone is suffi cient to provide maximum pro-tection in these situations. Front airbags The front airbags protect the driver and front passenger in the event of a serious front impact in order to limit the risks of injury to the head and chest. They are fi tted in the centre of the steering wheel for the driver and in the dashboard for the front passenger. Impact detection zones A. Front impact zone. B. Side impact zone. The deployment of one or more airbags is accompanied by a slight discharge of harm-less smoke and a noise, due to the activation of the pyrotechnic cartridge incorporated in the system. This smoke is not harmful, but sensi-tive individuals may experience some irritation. The noise of the detonation may result in a slight loss of hearing for a short time. Activation They are deployed simultaneously, ex-cept in cases where the passenger's front airbag is deactivated, in the event of a serious front impact applied to all or part of the front impact zone A , in the longitudinal centreline of the vehi-cle on a horizontal plane directed from the front to the rear of the vehicle. The front airbag infl ates between the front occupant of the vehicle and the dashboard to cushion their forward movement. The airbags do not operate when the ignition is off. This equipment only operates once. If a second impact occurs (during the same or a subsequent accident), the airbag will not operate.
7SAFETY91 Disarming the front passenger's front air bag * Reactivation As soon as the child seat is removed, turn the air bag slot to the "ON" position to re-activate the air bag and thus ensure its safety function. To ensure the safety of your child, it is essential to disarm the passenger air bag when you install a rear-facing child seat on the front passenger seat. Otherwise, the child would risk being seriously injured or killed if the air bag were to infl ate. With the ignition switched off, insert the key into the passenger air bag disarming switch, turn it to the "OFF" position, then remove the key keeping the slot in this position. The knee airbag protects the driver's knees in the event of a serious front impact. It is fi tted in the dashboard below the steering column. In the event of a malfunction * According to country. Triggering It is deployed at the same time as the front airbags. Instrument panel warning lamp. If this warning lamp comes on, ac-companied by an audible signal and a message on the multifunction screen, contact a PEUGEOT dealer to have the system checked. The airbags may no longer be deployed in the event of a serious impact. Knee airbag When the ignition is on, this warning light remains lit on the instrument panel for the duration of disarming. In the "OFF" position, the passenger air bag will not be triggered in the event of an impact.
7SAFETY92 Front/rear * lateral airbags The lateral airbags protect the driver and passengers (with the exception of the rear centre passenger) in the event of a serious side impact in order to limit the risks of injury to the chest. The lateral airbags are fi tted in the front seat back and in the rear door armrest * . Activation The lateral airbags are deployed inde-pendently of each other in the event of a serious side impact applied to all or part of the side impact zone B , perpendicular to the longitudinal cen-treline of the vehicle on a horizontal plane directed from the outside to the inside of the vehicle. The lateral airbag infl ates between the front or rear occupant of the ve-hicle and the corresponding door trim panel. * According to country. A. Front impact zone. B. Side impact zone. Activation It is deployed at the same time as the corresponding side air bags in the event of a serious side impact applied to all or part of the side impact zone B , perpendicular to the longitudinal cen-treline of the vehicle on a horizontal plane directed from the outside to the inside of the vehicle. The curtain airbag infl ates between the front or rear occupant of the ve-hicle and the windows. Impact detection zones Curtain airbags The curtain airbags protect the driver and passengers (with the exception of the rear centre passenger) in the event of a serious side impact in order to limit the risks of injury to the head. The curtain airbags are fi tted in the door pillars and the upper part of the passenger compartment. In the event of a malfunction Instrument panel warning lamp. If this warning lamp comes on, ac-companied by an audible signal and a message on the multifunction screen, contact a PEUGEOT dealer to have the system checked. The airbags may no longer be deployed in the event of a serious impact. In the event of a minor impact or bump to the side of the vehicle or if the vehicle rolls over, the airbag may not be deployed. In the event of a rear or front collision, the airbag is not deployed.
7SAFETY93 Curtain air bags Do not fi x or glue anything to the pillars or the roof. This could cause injury to the head when the curtain air bag infl ates. Do not remove the grab handlesinstalled on the roof, they play a part in securing the curtain air bags. Front air bags Do not drive holding the steering wheel by its spokes or resting your hands on the centre part of the wheel. Passengers must not place their feet on the fascia. Smoke as little as possible; deploy-ment of the air bags can cause burns or the risk of injury from a cigarette or pipe. Never remove or pierce the steering wheel or hit it violently. For the air bags to be fullyeffective, observe the following safety rules: Wear a correctly adjusted seat belt. Sit in a normal upright position. Do not leave anything between the occupants and the air bags (a child, pet, object...). This could hamper the operation of the air bags or injure the occupants. After an accident or if the vehicle has been stolen or broken into, have the air bag systems checked. All work on the air bag system is strictly forbidden unless it is carried out by qualifi ed personnel of the PEUGEOT network. Even if all of the precautions men-tioned are observed, a risk of in-jury or of slight burns to the head, chest or arms, when an air bag is deployed, cannot be ruled out. The bag infl ates almost instantly (within a few milliseconds) then defl ates within the same time discharging the hot gas via openings provided for this purpose. * According to country. Side air bags * Only put approved covers on the seats. These will not hamper the deployment of the side air bags. Consult a PEUGEOT dealer. Do not fi x or glue anything to the seat backs. This could cause injury to the chest or arms when the side air bag infl ates. Do not sit with the upper part of the body any nearer to the door than necessary. Steering column air bag * Do not sit with your knees any nearer to the steering wheel than necessary.
